P.J. Spillings were contracted to build a new extension, and carry out major refurbishment works to the existing East Anglian Air Ambulance Hangar at their HQ.
East Anglian Air Ambulance exists to save lives by delivering highly skilled doctors and critical care paramedics by air to seriously ill or injured people in the region. Since launching in 2000 they have attended over 30,000 lifesaving missions, with crew comprising specialist pre-hospital doctors and critical care paramedics, operating out of high-tech helicopters. P.J Spillings were delighted to be involved in such a big and exciting commercial project.
The project was designed to provide extensive new office and hangar facilities to the team, including all associated ancillary areas. Our team undertook all associated external works and drainage as part of the build.
The works included a UXO Watching Brief, and the construction of the new building following our initial demolition work.
A ground floor slab was laid before putting steelwork and cladding in place, and the construction of a concrete roof. Hollowcore floors and concrete staircases were used for both design and functionality, and curtain walling and acoustic ceilings were added, to limit the noise to the office space from the hangar. A raised access floor was also installed.
The innovative design of this ‘breathing building’ adopts the concept of mixing ventilation in a controlled hybrid ventilation system, using natural ventilation whenever possible.
P.J. Spillings undertook all mechanical and electrical work and a BMS system was installed. Our team also installed glazed screens and a bespoke reception desk as part of our decoration and fit out.
Everything was on a large scale with this project, and we fitted our very first mega door, to allow helicopters to enter and exit the hangar with ease and, of course, speed.
